How much does it cost?

The course fees are currently £590 per year - these can be paid in instalments. There are no additional fees however you should bear in mind that you will have additional expenses such as buying textbooks. A rough estimate is that you could expect to spend approximately £100 on books and other essentials each year.

What are the term dates?

There is some variation every year but the following is an approximate guide:

Course begins: Late September
Semester 1 Teaching: September-December
First piece of assessment: December/January
Semester 2 Teaching: January-April
Exams: May/June
Results: July

On which evenings is the course taught?

The Evening Degree runs on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Teaching starts at 6pm and finishes by 9pm. Although teaching contact time is an important part of the course a great deal of importance is attached to student independent learning. The student will be expected to do a great deal of preparation and research in their own time on top of the class contact time.

Where does the course take place?

The course runs on two sites

Stoke on Trent Campus (Leek Road site) Click here for a map

Staffordshire University Lichfield Centre, The Friary, Lichfield Click here for a map

How long does the course last?

Each year you will study 3 modules (subjects) and the course lasts four years in total. It is possible to study the degree over more than 4 years (see below).

Is the part time evening degree recognised by professional bodies?

Yes. If you wish to carry on after your degree to qualify as a solicitor or a barrister both the Law Society and the Bar Council recognise the Staffordshire University degree as a "qualifying law degree". Part time evening LLB students do the same assessments as full time Staffordshire LLB students therefore the final qualification is in fact the same.

Do the examinations take place during the evening?

No. Because PT Evening students do the same examinations as full time students we have to hold the exams at the same time. This means that you will have to take your end of year exams during the day. Examinations are held in both Stoke and Lichfield. We will give you as much notice as possible of the dates to allow you to make the necessary arrangements.

Is it possible to study part time during the day?

Yes. There is a separate Part time Day LLB degree although this is available at Stoke only. For more details you should contact Jo Bradbury (see contact details below)

Can i take the degree over more than 4 years?

Yes. Law Society and Bar Council regulations allow you to take up to 6 years to complete a Part Time Law degree. We have drawn up a number of suggested alternative routes for those who wish to take their degree over a longer period.

What qualifications do i need to apply?

We are committed to widening participation in higher education and our admissions policy on the PT evening degree reflects this. We will consider all applications regardless of the educational background of the applicant. Many students have completed the evening degree over the years despite initially coming on to the course without any formal educational qualifications.
